Brooklyn Fishing Derby 2025

Timeline: 9:00 am — 4:00 pm

Location: Prospect Park: Lake Shore

The Brooklyn Fishing Derby is a popular, open event for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA, offering a full day of hands-on outdoor activity. Participants will make their own fishing poles, cast into Prospect Park Lake, and compete for awards — all while learning sustainable fishing practices.

ℹ️ Notes for Troop 23 Scouts

This is not a troop-organized event, but we encourage individual participation. It’s a great way to:

• Earn requirements for the Fishing Merit Badge
• Practice outdoor skills and patience
• Engage with other NYC Scouts in a relaxed setting

Families must register individually and arrange transportation to and from Prospect Park.

🐟 Rules & Regulations

This is a catch-and-release event. All New York State fishing laws apply:

• ✅ Fishing License Required (for ages 16+):
  A DEC-issued freshwater license is needed. A one-day license can be purchased online for $5 → NYS Fishing License Info
• ⚠️ Tackle Requirements:
  • Barbless hooks only
  • Lead-free sinkers for weights under ½ oz
  • Non-stainless-steel hooks recommended
• 🚯 Leave No Trace:
  Please carry out all your trash and leave the park cleaner than you found it.

• 🥇🥈🥉 1st, 2nd, 3rd place — Cub Scouts (overall)
• 🥇🥈🥉 1st, 2nd, 3rd place — Scouts BSA (overall)

• Sunscreen, hat, or shade

• Fishing license (for those 16+)
