For years, Troop 23 has talked about taking winter camping to the next level — something truly rugged, raw, and rewarding.
This winter, we’re doing it. Under the leadership of Steven Magnus, a seasoned outdoor survivalist, cold-weather backpacking enthusiast, and longtime Troop 23 mentor, we’re launching our first true cold weather backpacking experience.
This is not car camping. This is not cabin camping. This is the real thing.
🏕️ What to Expect
This will be an immersive overnight experience that includes:
🥾 Hiking in snow or freezing conditions with full packs
❄️ Setting up camp in the cold, learning how to stay warm, dry, and safe
🔥 Cooking in freezing temps with backpacking gear
🛌 Sleeping outdoors in sub-freezing temperatures with proper gear
🧠 Skills sessions led by Steven Magnus: from layering strategy to stove safety to frostbite prevention
You’ll push your limits, test your planning skills, and gain confidence that will stay with you for life.
🧢 Who It’s For
This experience is open to prepared scouts who:
Have previously completed a warm-weather backpacking trip (like Harriman or TMR)
Are ready for physical and mental challenge
Have appropriate cold-weather gear or are willing to acquire it
Can commit to training and gear checks ahead of the trip
This will be a small group, high-intensity experience — with safety, teamwork, and self-reliance at its core.
📋 How to Prepare
Participants will receive:
A packing list specific to cold-weather backpacking
Training sessions on layering, emergency procedures, and nutrition
Optional shakedown hikes
Support from Steven Magnus and our adult leadership team to ensure safety and success
🚨 Not Your Average Campout
This isn’t for everyone. But if you’re looking for an unforgettable challenge — the kind that builds stories, skills, and strength — this is your chance.
