First Class Rank

First Class completes the outdoor skills. A Scout helps plan the menu for a campout, budgets and buys the food for three or more, and serves as cook, supervising the others at the stove or fire and leading the cleanup. Around that: lashings and a camp gadget, a one-mile orienteering course and a GPS route, ten native plants and reading the weather, the swimmer test and a line rescue, bandages and carrying an injured person, and an emergency plan for home.

By First Class a Scout has been on at least ten troop or patrol activities, six of them outdoors and three with nights out, and has given three more hours of service on a new project. A First Class Scout has also told someone about Scouting and invited them to an outing or a meeting.

First Class is the last of the four skill ranks. Star, Life and Eagle are earned with merit badges, service and leadership in the troop rather than new outdoor skills.

First Class Rank Requirements

1 See the Swimming merit badge requirements for details about the Scouting America swimmer test.

2 Under certain exceptional conditions, where the climate keeps the outdoor water temperature below safe levels year-round, or where there are no suitably safe and accessible places (outdoors or indoors) within a reasonable traveling distance to swim at any time during the year, the council Scout executive and advancement committee may, on an individual Scout basis, authorize an alternative for requirements 6a and 6e. The local council may establish appropriate procedures for submitting and processing these types of requests. All the other requirements, none of which necessitate entry in the water or entry in a watercraft on the water, must be completed as written.

Requirement text as published by Scouting America in Scouts BSA Requirements (2025 edition), word for word. No council, district, unit or individual may add to or take away from these requirements.
