Second Class Rank

Second Class moves from camping with the patrol to doing the work. A Scout picks a patrol site and explains the choice, prepares wood and builds a fire, sets up and lights a camp stove, and plans and cooks a hot breakfast or lunch on a campout. The rank adds map and compass with a five-mile hike, ten kinds of wild animals, the beginner swim test and reach-and-throw rescues, first aid for the serious cases, a plan, made with a parent, to earn money for something, and two hours of service.

In Troop 23 requirements 2a, 2b and 2c are shown at the same fire as the Firem'n Chit; they are signed separately. The swim test needs water over a Scout’s head, and summer camp is where our Scouts usually pass it.

It ends with a Scoutmaster conference and a board of review.

Second Class Rank Requirements

1 If you use a wheelchair or crutches, or if it is difficult for you to get around, you may substitute “trip” for “hike” in requirement 3(b) and 3(c).

2 Under certain exceptional conditions, where the climate keeps the outdoor water temperature below safe levels year-round, or where there are no suitably safe and accessible places (outdoors or indoors) within a reasonable traveling distance to swim at any time during the year, the council Scout executive and advancement committee may, on an individual Scout basis, authorize an alternative for requirement 5(b). The local council may establish appropriate procedures for submitting and processing these types of requests. All the other requirements, none of which necessitate entry in the water or entry in a watercraft on the water, must be completed as written.

Requirement text as published by Scouting America in Scouts BSA Requirements (2025 edition), word for word. No council, district, unit or individual may add to or take away from these requirements.
