This year's Memorial Day Flag Planting has been cancelled. With the Memorial Day Parade the very next morning, Troop 23 is concentrating its volunteers and families on the parade, where the Troop marches together. With few families able to commit to both days back-to-back, we'd rather show up in strength at the parade than spread thin across the weekend.
The tradition isn't going anywhere β Troop 23 plans to return to Green-Wood Cemetery to honor our fallen veterans again next year. In the meantime, families who'd like to pay their respects this weekend are warmly encouraged to visit Green-Wood on their own, or to join us at the Memorial Day Parade.
When:
May 24, 2026
Timeline:
10:00 am β 12:00 pm
Location: 5th Avenue main entrance (5th Ave & 25th St)
Each year, Troop 23 continues a proud tradition of honoring the brave U.S. veterans laid to rest at Green-Wood Cemetery by placing American flags at their graves on the eve of Memorial Day β a quiet, respectful tribute the day before the parade.
This meaningful act of service allows Scouts and families to reflect on the true purpose of Memorial Day while giving back to our community. It's one of the most direct and visible ways we show appreciation for those who gave their lives in service to our country.
Date: Sunday, May 24, 2026
Time: 10:00 am β 12:00 pm
Location: Green-Wood Cemetery β 5th Avenue main entrance (5th Ave & 25th St, Brooklyn)
Uniform: Class B (Troop 23 t-shirt, green pants)
Open to: Scouts, siblings, parents, and friends β all are welcome
Please come dressed in Class B uniform (Troop shirt and green pants). Be prepared for the weather β one year we braved pouring rain, and another year we faced intense heat. Bring rain gear and water, and wear waterproof footwear, as the grass may still be wet from morning dew.
Whether you can stay for 30 minutes or a couple of hours, all are welcome to participate. This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate Scout values and earn service hours while making a difference that will be noticed and appreciated.
Let's continue showing our respect and gratitude in a visible and meaningful way.
We meet at the 5th Avenue main entrance of Green-Wood Cemetery, at the corner of 5th Avenue and 25th Street. Look for Troop 23 leaders inside the gates with the flag bundles and assignment maps.
The entrance is a short walk from the R train at 25th Street (one block east) and is also reachable by the B63 bus along 5th Avenue. Limited street parking is available along 5th Avenue and the surrounding side streets β carpooling is encouraged.
