OLA Clothing Drive

Our Lady of Angels runs a clothing drive several times a year, and each time the parish asks Troop 23 to work the curb out front. The collection van parks on the 4th Avenue side of the church, and scouts meet donors as they arrive — Sunday morning, three hours, done by noon.

Parishioners and neighbors bring gently used clothing they no longer need, and the parish passes it on to families who do. Our part is the handoff: greet each donor, take the bags, and load them onto the van. The work is simple and the shift is short, but it happens in full view of the neighborhood the Troop has called home since 1946 — and it is the kind of help Father Abels, a steady supporter of our group, counts on.

The Troop worked the same corner at the spring drive, and this is the summer round. Every scout who turns up gets service hours recorded, and service hours are the currency of half the advancement trail — Star and Life both run on them.

Please tell your Patrol Leader ahead of time when you can arrive and how long you can stay, and answer promptly when they reach out. Coverage across the full three hours matters more than a crowd at 9:00 am.

Required attire is Class A or Class B, which includes green pants. (No sweats, jeans, etc.)

What Scouts Do

• Greet donors as they pull up and help them out of the car
• Receive bags and boxes of donated clothing
• Carry the donations to the collection van and load them
• Keep the sidewalk clear and the drop-off point orderly
• Sign in and out so hours are recorded accurately

Come dressed for a summer morning on the pavement — water bottle, and a hat if you burn. Scouts who can only stay an hour are still worth having; stay as long as you can and hand off to whoever comes next.

Signing Up and Service Hours

There is no fee and no form for this one — attendance runs through the patrols. Tell your Patrol Leader when you plan to arrive and how long you can stay, so the shift is covered from 9:00 am to noon rather than front-loaded.

Sign in with your Patrol Leader when you get there and sign out when you leave. Hours are logged after the event and count toward the service requirements for rank advancement. (And remember, you can never have too many service hours.)
