Camp Aquehonga is one of the two troop summer camps at Ten Mile River Scout Camps, the Greater New York Councils reservation in the Sullivan County Catskills near Narrowsburg, New York. It sits on the shore of Half Moon Lake. Patrols can cook their own meals in their campsites here, and the camp has an in-ground swimming pool with a spiral waterslide. The summer of 2026 was its 97th season.

Troop 23 spent its 2026 summer camp week at Aquehonga and has booked Week 1 of 2027 here as well. What a week of camp with the troop looks like, year after year, is on the Summer Camp page.

On the Lake and in the Pool

Half Moon Lake is the boating waterfront: canoeing, kayaking, rowing and small-boat sailing are taught there, and Scouts can earn a stand-up paddleboarding award. The pool holds the swimming classes, lifesaving, the mile swim and the troops' free swim time. Every Scout and adult takes a swim test on the first afternoon, and the classification it gives decides which of these each of them can do; anyone who does not pass can try again later in the week.

Around Camp

Besides the waterfront, Aquehonga has a STEM center, a Scoutcraft center, a Scout Skills area and a high ropes center for COPE. The Johnson Center holds the camp office and the commissary, where patrols pick up their food. The shooting ranges and archery are on the field-sports area by the camp entrance.

A troop chooses how it eats for the week: the patrols cook all three meals at their campsite, the camp brings cooked meals to the site, or the patrols cook some meals and take the rest delivered. In the evenings there are camp-wide programs: Aqua-Olympics at the pool, an ice cream social, an Iron Chef cook-off, a Friday camp barbecue and the closing campfire in the amphitheater.

Arriving at Camp

Troops arrive on Sunday from midday. Aquehonga staff meet each troop at the entrance, and a Site Guide takes it to its campsite and through the first afternoon: a leader's financial check-in at the camp office, the medical recheck, swim tests, the flag ceremony and a barbecue dinner, and the opening campfire. Every Scout and every adult staying in camp brings a completed medical form.

Cars park only in the camp's designated lots; at check-in and check-out one car per campsite may carry gear to the site. The map on this page marks the lot by the entrance and the Welcome Center. For a GPS, the Ten Mile River guide gives the reservation headquarters, 1481 Crystal Lake Road, Narrowsburg, NY 12764; from there, follow the signs for Aquehonga along the camp roads. The council lists the camp itself at 125 Aquehonga Road.

Writing to a Scout at Camp

Mail goes to Ten Mile River headquarters, is sorted there, and reaches the camp once a day. It can take several days to arrive, so mail early: packages sent late often reach camp after the Scout has gone home. The 2026 Leader's Guide asks for this format:

Scout's name
Troop 23, Campsite (number), Week (number)
Camp Aquehonga
Ten Mile River Scout Camps
1481 Crystal Lake Road
Narrowsburg, NY 12764-4414

Scouts at camp are hard to reach by phone; messages are passed on at meals. The Aquehonga camp office is (845) 252-2023, and for emergencies the Ten Mile River main number, (845) 252-2000, answers at all times.

Troop 23 at Aquehonga

The troop spent its 2026 summer camp week here: six Scouts and two adult leaders at campsite 7A, a short walk from the entrance lot. By Saturday the Scouts had completed 27 merit badges between them. They swam in the camp's pool competition, rappelled down Indian Cliffs, the reservation's climbing and rappelling outpost, climbed the High COPE course, and joined an Order of the Arrow conservation project in the woods. That year the troop took the camp's delivered meals. The whole week is on the 2026 summer camp page.

For 2027 the troop is booked for Week 1: arrival on Sunday, July 4, Independence Day, and departure on Saturday, July 10. The summers before 2026, in 2019 and from 2021 to 2025, were at Camp Yawgoog in Rhode Island.
