Troop 23 Brooklyn is proud to bring back Scout Sunday — an annual tradition that celebrates the bond between Scouting and faith. After several years away from this observance, our troop returns to Our Lady of Angels Church on Sunday, February 22, 2026 for the 9:00 AM Mass.

Scout Sunday is one of the most meaningful dates on the Scouting calendar. It falls during Scout Anniversary Week, which marks the founding of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. For over a century, Scout troops across the country have honored this occasion by attending services with their faith communities — and this year, Troop 23 proudly continues that tradition.

Why Scout Sunday Matters

The Scout Oath begins with three duties — Duty to God, Duty to Country, and Duty to Self. Scout Sunday is the moment each year when we pause to honor the first of those duties and reflect on the role faith plays in Scouting.

Since 1941, Scout Sunday has been a nationwide observance. It reminds us that Scouting was never just about camping and merit badges — it was built on a foundation of character, service, and reverence. When our Scouts sit together in a pew in full uniform, they represent more than themselves. They represent a movement that has shaped millions of young people for over a hundred years.

The twelfth point of the Scout Law says it plainly: "A Scout is Reverent." He respects the beliefs of others and is faithful in his own spiritual obligations. Scout Sunday is when that principle comes to life.

Our Lady of Angels and Troop 23

Our Lady of Angels is more than just a church where we hold meetings. For decades, OLA served as Troop 23's charter organization, and the parish continues to be our spiritual home and closest community partner in Bay Ridge. That history runs deep — it is part of who we are as a troop.

OLA provides us with a meeting place, a community, and a home base. In return, our Scouts serve the parish through clothing drives, holiday projects, and community events throughout the year. Scout Sunday is the day we come together as a troop to honor that partnership publicly — sitting in the pews of the church that has supported our Scouting program for generations.

Returning to Scout Sunday after several years makes this occasion especially meaningful. It is a statement that Troop 23 values this connection and is committed to strengthening it.

What to Expect

Scouts will attend the full 9:00 AM Mass at Our Lady of Angels. Here is what every Scout needs to know:

The Mass will last approximately one hour. Scouts are free to leave after the service concludes.

For Parents and Families

Family members are warmly invited to attend the Mass alongside our Scouts. It is a meaningful experience to see your Scout participating in this tradition, and your presence makes the occasion even more special.

Younger siblings who are in Cub Scouts (Pack 23) are also welcome to wear their uniforms and join the troop.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Troop 23 leadership.

About Scout Sunday in America

Scout Sunday was formally established in 1941 as part of Scout Anniversary Week — the period surrounding February 8, the founding date of the Boy Scouts of America. Troops and packs across the country attend religious services in uniform, participate in their congregations, and reflect on the spiritual dimension of Scouting.

For Catholic Scouts, the observance holds special meaning. Organizations like the National Catholic Committee on Scouting work to deepen the connection between Scouting and faith, offering religious emblems such as the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII awards for older Scouts who pursue their spiritual development through Scouting.

Whether a Scout is working toward a religious emblem or simply attending Mass with his troop for the first time, Scout Sunday is a reminder that Scouting is about the whole person — mind, body, and spirit.
